Gateway District
The Gateway is Salt Lake City's only
open-air contemporary destination, delivering
the ultimate in shopping, dining and entertainment
spread across 105 stores and restaurants. Originally
built in anticipation of the 2002 Winter Olympic
Games in Salt Lake City, it has since become
one of the most popular commerce centers in the
west, frequented by Salt Lake residents and out-of-state
visitors alike.
Stores include Abercrombie & Fitch, J. Crew, Virgin Megastore, Barnes
and Noble Booksellers, and Apple Computers. Fixtures such as Bastille, Bill
Loya, Victoria's Secret, Brookstone and the Megaplex 12 Movie Theater also
tenant the complex. Restaurants featured throughout the mall include the California
Pizza Kitchen, the Happy Sumo sushi bar, McGrath’s Fishhouse, The Dodo,
Fleming's Prime Steak House and Ruby's Diner.
Although constantly expanding, the Gateway District refers to the area typically
considered to begin with the beautifully restored Union Pacific Depot on the
Gateway’s north side. It ends with the equally breath-taking Rio Grande
Station four blocks to the south, with the Gateway shops and restaurants situated
between.
Beyond shopping and dining, the Gateway District features some distinctive
sight seeing options. First built in 1908, the Union Pacific Depot features
early French renaissance architecture and original artwork. The Rio Grande
station is full of historical exhibits highlighting the structure’s rich
history.
The Olympic Legacy Plaza at the Gateway features the dazzling "dancing
waters" of the Olympic Snowflake Fountain, all overlooked by a classic
clock tower.
